Recorded perfomence, crude oil, video art: 2 minutes, 42 seconds
Zirku I was produced after an archived interview with Masoud Salem ( 1922 – 2016), speaking about the abolishment of slavery and the process of oil industry found in Zirku Island in United Arab Emirates during 1950’s. “Then the water turned black” . The video was preformed by my sibling who currently works in Zirku oil rig platform, which is one of the first offshore oil rigs that established wealth and modern prosperity in U.A.E. Zirku I is part of series of works depicting the existence of crude oil and its political implications on enslaved people and the after life of slavery.
