“[…] no one can live without traces. If you leave no traces, or if someone takes it upon himself to wipe them out, you’re as good as dead.” – Jean Baudrillard Probably You (the reader) are being observed at this very moment. Maybe it’s a computer camera, secretly watching you. Maybe a phone lens or your car’s navigation system, while it measures the distance to your next destination. Maybe it’s the CCTV cameras in your local grocery store while you’re picking out the ripest avocado. On the 19th of November I set out on a pre-planned route through the Vilnius Old Town, appearing in many such cameras. Suddenly, a lot of personal information was absorbed into a digital black hole, and in response, it grew. My objective became to answer this question – “Where does the CCTV camera footage go after being recorded?” This creative project consists of 52 such recordings. In various ways, I manipulate the video material with the goal of emphasising how much personal information it stores, how this digital monster grows in our modern urban panopticon. Eventually, the protagonist becomes apparent, my digital data-double.
