In this relief I have worked on the topic of ring dance through an ornamental lens, with influence borrowed from the theater. The women holding hands create a pattern that allows one to imagine a continuation – like in a huge freeze in an ancient temple. The pattern brings attention to the simplifying treatment of the motif as a sort of deconstruction of the actual story. The story of this dance tells about a tragic historical event where women held hands, danced together and one by one jumped out from a cliff. ( 1867 Anatonia, Pondic Greek genocide by the Turks). I learned this dance as a kid in Pondian folk dance school in Stockholm. The aspect of the theater or the stage has been very inspiring for me through out my MFA project. For me the ‘“hypothetical” stage is a place to play out stories and memories through my reliefs and sculptures. It´s a place to process daily impressions and expressions. I work a lot with drama writing and I see my reliefs as an extension of the textual work. My master essay was written in the format of a drama play. The works in my master solo was installed as scenograpgy for that essay which was called AUTONOMIES.
