Oil on canvas
“A cricket is singing in the shadows, come, little boy, into your mother’s bosom, oh, don’t ask – there is no bread…” (a song composed by Raimonds Pauls) sang my mother, walking along the long path that led home. A view of the full moon, which is surrounded by a million stars. I remember this memory so vividly – the brightest of all. However, in a recent conversation, where I recounted this memory to my mother, she expressed a different realization, this memory had a different meaning in her eyes. I remember it as a sweet, heartfelt moment, but my mother also knew its painful truth – there really was no bread.” The painting “Oh, don’t ask – there’s no bread…” is one of seven additional paintings in sieries called “Parallels of Memory”. It is an exposition of the artist’s childhood experiences in relationships with her parents. A reflection of the multi-layered reality that is carried over time as a symbol of the care of a fellow human being and the silent struggles of life. The paintings are permeated by sentimentality, introspection and insights gained by looking back on these childhood experiences.
