The series of paintings proceeds from a state that is on the border of empiricism — a dissipating moment that has no definite beginning or end. Sensory ceases to be self-evident. A state in which the physical and the psychic do not oppose each other, but rather cohere. The West has associated ecstasy, orgasmic experience, or mystical state not as the end of meaning, but as a delay in its cessation. The French expression la petite mort (“little death”) appears here not as an explanation, but as a tonal allusion to a state in which one is more precisely at the final exit.
