Dawn, is a fictional character that I named after my grandmother Golden Dawn (Xrýs Avgí). She is like a coiled up spring from the past ready to revive, dance and fight. In an essay I wrote Dawn´s character functions as a depiction of bravery in hard times. The spiral, or circular movement of (ring)dance is something I connect to my view of life as circular. With circular living comes the “endless”. And with the endless comes melancholy. Melancholy is a very present emotion in my work. I wanted to explore this feeling through the stories of my grandmother that escaped the genocide in Turkey. Dawn can also be seen as a “Baba Jaga” – a female figure from slavic folkclore that is portrayed as very witty and hard to kill! Baba Jaga can also be a kind and wise old lady.
