Bils Laguns: from the series The Fluid Gender (Beyond the Binary), 2023
Photopolymer etching, drawing, mixed media, paper
The exploration of identity and the expression of gender have been significant themes throughout my artistic journey. From my early works, I have been driven to document observations on gender, gender stereotypes, and various social issues. Human diversity, aging, freedom of self-expression, sexuality, and the experiences intertwined with our bodies have always held a central place in my artistic focus. This exploration stems from my own experiences as well as those of my friends and acquaintances. During my Master’s thesis, I conducted in-depth research on the transformation and fluidity of human gender. The series of graphic prints ‘’The Fluid Gender (Beyond the Binary)” depicts the diversity and fluidity of gender identity, with a focus on nonbinary and queer (genderqueer) individuals. The artistic practice is rooted in close collaboration with models and influenced by my personal feelings and attitude towards gender identity, challenging traditional stereotypes associated with gender roles. The series is made using photopolymer etching, drawing and mixed media. Interdisciplinary techniques and collaborative methods emphasize the individual, subjective and multi-layered experience of gender and its fluid practice. The work process shows the experience of diversity and its nuanced manifestations. The pursuit of personal identity and the freedom to express oneself often face misunderstanding and hostility from society. I am driven to shed light on the rights and individual autonomy, as well as the search for identity beyond the constraints of societal gender constructs. These topics touch upon issues that are currently vital and relevant in Latvian society. The problem of intolerance towards LGBTQ+ and other marginalized groups has persisted for too long. It is crucial to address the need for a safe, inclusive society, create a legal framework, and foster compassionate treatment. By exploring and discussing such topics, I am hoping to reduce the stereotypes and prejudices, ultimately fostering understanding and creating an inclusive and safe environment for all.
