Sandra Jõgeva
SERVANT OF THE PEOPLE
February 2 – 24, 2026
Gallery Metropol 6 m2 and Metropol Cabinet (Vana-Kalamaja 46, Tallinn)
Artist will be present at the gallery on Saturday 7.2, 14.2 and 21.2 from 12 to 8 pm,
at other times the exhibition is open by prior appointment.
Metropol Gallery hosts an artist, filmmaker, writer and critic who keeps the medical history of Estonian art life under a sharp microscope and who, without mercy, always goes to the next battle in the name of justice and art.
Sandra explains: “This exhibition mixes art with private life, and politics with the personal and performative. A significant part of the exhibition is the video installation “My Fight”, which is based on my email exchange with the leadership of the Estonian Artists’ Union in the summer of 2025, with the aim of making the application process for artists to galleries managed by the EKL more democratic, transparent and faster.
This email exchange is part of my longer ‘struggle’—probably without the quotation marks after all—for improving the position of artists. For over ten years, I have consistently informed the public about the shortcomings and injustices prevailing in the Estonian art world, as well as occasional questionable corruption, through my interviews, opinion pieces, and social media posts, which have typically sparked long and in-depth discussions.
I don’t think I have gotten anywhere with this struggle of mine. So I come to the second important counterpoint of my exhibition, which is Napoleon as a person who failed in his battles and as a metaphor. I wanted to use ready-made objects in my exhibition, but not cheap junk, rather antique items.
This exhibition is composed of items from a well-known militarily themed antique shop, as well as from Kalamaja Bakery, a wine shop, a flower shop, and also from my own wallet. The titles of the works are: “Loser,” “Are You a Cake or a Human?,” “For Maarin,” “1812,” and “Defense Expenses.”
Execution of video installation and “1812”: Jüri-Illimar Reinberg-Šestakov
Poster: Henrik Jõgeva
Supported by: Malle Leis Estate, NJORD Law Firm and its partner Liisi Jürgen
