With the next exhibition, Metropol is adding its contribution to this year’s cultural summer
program.
Graphic artist Lauri Koppel will present works based on events that took place in Lääne County
6 years ago. This summer, just like before, birds will sing and greenery will flourish in this place.

„In the dark night of the soul, one must encounter something that has been avoided. There one
can surrender or resist. Some will resist.
On June 6, 2020, Mikk Tarraste, an entrepreneur and nursing teacher, killed two people near
Lihula. Two years later, he took his own life in prison.
The exhibition is built around a work depicting the Lihula murder scene. Here is a shadow I
have met in my dream; curtains that require courage to look behind; matchstick constructions
that restore order in universe.”

Lauri Koppel (1986) studied graphic arts at the Estonian Academy of Arts (BA, 2008; MA 2012).
Since 2010, he has been working as a master at the lithography workshop Ubu Noir. He has
been awarded the Eduard Wiiralt Art Prize (2022) and the scholarship of the same name (2010).
In his work, he has dealt with the themes of collective visual memory, local material culture and
the fading of environmental landmarks, synthesizing the specific heritage of the region and
visual culture through the graphic medium.
