Metropol races into the autumn season with screeching tires, ready to be filled with the powerful yet delicate poetry of metal. The gallery is simultaneously adorned, armed, and fortified. Somewhere from behind the wall, the snip-snip of scissors can also be heard.
.Kadi Kübarsepp defiantly refuses to remain within the confines of her discipline. Her necklaces transform into architectural skeletons, protective shields, and entire standalone performances—or, if you prefer a more down-to-earth term, simply “baubles.” Rusted steel and oxidized silver; beginning and end; war and peace.
This exhibition includes a cross-section of Kübarsepp’s work from 2013 to the present. Mostly made of steel and copper, but also brass and silver. Combining technicism and constructivism with organic forms, Kübarsepp, (hatter in English) as the name suggests, conjures up her own urban space from a hat, which is probably a metaphor for her own inner world. Soft and flowing, sharp and cutting. In addition to graphicity, her work is also characterized by a perceptibly ritualistic, subconscious and primal feminine performativity.
Kadi has written: “We can adorn ourselves with other people’s feathers, but self-revelation is frightening to everyone. Therefore, a person inside the ornament is as if protected from the dangers surrounding him in society.”
Kadi Kübarsepp (b. 1982) received a master’s degree in jewelry art from the Estonian Academy of Arts in 2011. She has participated in numerous joint exhibitions both in Estonia and abroad, and is a member of the Estonian Artists’ Union and the Estonian Metal Artists’ Union. Her works can be found in the collection of the Estonian Museum of Applied Arts and Design.

In addition to the main exhibition, the Vedelik Salon will feature the artist HILDEGARD‘s (b.1999) “Goulash Exhibition“. She has studied ethnology-anthropology, and collage is often a tool for her to explore places and people. She is particularly fascinated by found objects, all sorts of meaningless garbage that remains from people’s everyday lives.
Metropol Gallery is located in a tsarist-era stone house at the seaward end of Vana-Kalmaja street. To visit the exhibition, please contact the author or gallery a few days in advance to arrange an exact time. When you arrive, please ring the doorbell.
