After special jubilee exhibitions, Metropol gallery’s 20th anniversary events continue on an international level.
The self-initiated artist-run galleries Metropol and Huuto will visit each other this spring and hold exchange exhibitions. In April, Huuto’s artists exhibition “Tühjusest (On Emptiness)” will open in Tallinn, and in May, Metropol will respond with an exhibition in Helsinki.
The pair of exhibitions creates an imaginary Estonian-Finnish pipeline – as in an old punk song – connecting both galleries located on different shores of the Gulf of Finland and also celebrating Metropol’s long-standing close collaboration with Finnish friends.
A joint exhibition of six Finnish artists, titled explores emptiness as a space, a process and a philosophy.
The artworks express a desire to leave space for what is not there, and honour what we don’t know. The exhibition features works in various media, including painting, sculpture, installation and animation.
Something has left in Mirka Hämäläinen´s paintings. The emptiness in the paintings and drawings is an infinite space that let´s us collect one´s feelings and thoughts.
Enni Vekkeli´s clay sculptures have been burned with varying methods, some in ceramic kiln, some under a campfire. In water, some of them dissolve, wire around them rusts.
In Kaarina Ormio´s paintings we peak a big and unknown space from a small hole.
Memory lives and things are forgotten in Henrik Pathirane´s composition in the gallery´s filing cabinet.
In Laura Konttinen´s video work existence passes us – and we are already gone. And at the Height of the Third Day is an experimental stop motion animation about the transformation of an old photograph in a post-memory afterlife.
Timo Tähkänen´s Forgotten Saints remind us of what could have been. They are a part of Timo´s ongoing queer artistic research project.
In addition, on the first floor of Metropol also features the exhibition “ATTENTION! READY! C.n.O.P.T!,” curated by Ville Karel Viirelaid, which gives an overview of the times when the artists arrived at the building in 2005.
