Mall Nukke and Regina-Mareta Soonsein are artists, mother and daughter, who decided to organise a joint exhibition “2 in 1”. They were inspired by an interesting magic of numbers, as Mall is 54-years old and Regina is 27. Thus, only this year Mall’s age is double of her daughter, and Regina is twice younger than her mother.
Different generations of artists tend to interpret the same themes differently, especially when they analyse and give a form to liminal objects or unattainable phenomena.
The exhibition features Mall Nukke’s bashfully coloured oil paintings and Regina-Mareta Soonsein’s huge graphic art pieces in linocut technique. Mall’s paintings depict synergy and tensions created by the contact of artificial materials. This kind of tighten contact contorts pure symbols making them trivial, something like a simulated romance, ephemeron, or even a strange game with trash.
In Regina-Mareta’s linocuts one can sense something invisible created when human figures as substance come into contact with each-other. Her linocut works are full of life, a life in its aimless simplicity.
Both Mall Nukke and Regina-Mareta Soonsein share their deep interest in drawing. One can notice this in Nukke’s photorealist oil paintings as well as in Soonsein’s graphic works with twisted human figures.
Mall works in Tallinn, and Regina lives and studies in Tartu. Hence, their works were brought into this art gallery, a meeting point, briefly before their joint exhibition.
In this art gallery, the independent creative power of both artists is intertwined to form a new and intriguing synergy. Here the two become one.
