Under surfers, 2024
acrylic, ink, charcoal, oil on linen
If I try to turn off the agential part of my thinking-making mechanism while I paint, most probably one out of two things will appear; spirals or the human body. Could it be so that if I, the agential I, don’t intervene the body will make the mirror image of itself? Like the RNA strand, creating based on copying only. If you could make a pen draw by itself, would it then draw a line, mimicking the shape of a pen? Life is the world’s most elegant clock. As I was working on 05.00, I had a stretch canvas next to it that whenever I got frustrated or stuck, I allowed the hand to do whatever the hand wanted to do. The body wanted to do a body, and Under Surfers was begun. (working title snooze). It depicts a male figure resting, in a Disneyan exaggeration of himself. He is strong and slender with a firm butt, but still just resting, pulling a stretched blanket back towards him. What a contradiction! A circle set in motion is a spiral, and that’s how the hours of the clock end up in a time left uncontrolled.
