“A bird by the side of the road. When I notice it my day stops for a while. I crouch down and pick it up to hold it in my hand. It fits perfectly in my palm. It’s not alive anymore and I don’t know why. I could’ve easily missed it since its feathers are the same color as the dried grass on the ground. I take a picture of the small body in my hand. I sit with it, maybe a car or two pass by behind us, I can’t remember.”

This piece is about honoring small moments. I named it The hand and the gut because that is where my focus goes when I’m present. The day I found that bird by the side of the road I had to be present to even notice it. I think (and worry) a lot about what we miss out on when hurrying, disconnecting and being sucked into the entertainment of screens.
