Stranger is an ongoing photography series containing over 30 portraits where Mäntynen is meeting people for the first time. The images focus on a method where Mäntynen meets a stranger and immediately start taking photos together. Together they ask: How do we pose for a photo? Can we touch each other? What can we do together? After the photos, they get to know each other and try to find things that connect them. Each meeting is unique, and the poses and positions for the photos are invented together with the stranger at the time of the photo shoot. Mäntynen strives to challenge herself and always move on the edges of social norms and her comfort zone. Mäntynen is surprised every time by the courage and openness of the people. The project has been photographed in Germany, Tenerife, Benin, Finland and Italy so far. The portrait series has been exhibited in Kuvan Kevät 25 groupshow, two group shows in Germany and in Mäntynen’s solo exhibition in Photographic Centre Peri in Turku.
