Stitching, 2024

170 x 200 cm

cotton textile and yarn

Ways to think about islands. Pt. III. Like many others who deal with collective memory, I feel things I didn’t experience. A result of my family history. They live in tiny fragments of my DNR. I encountered them on my journey to the Lofoten archipelago in January 2024. My grandfather was there as part of the German army during WWII. I come back from the islands and feel a wound in me. Instantly I start stitching it. It turns out to remind me of the shape of the archipelago. A moment of closure and relief, a reassembling of myself in the remote place, a contact with the past and a new way of looking at it.
