Stoneware ceramics, concrete boards, metal wires
In the making of this work, I was aiming to move away from photographic references, or at least not using it in overt ways like I have done in the past. I wanted to explore what would happen if I let the hand and material guide the work, not constrained by a picture. I approached this in a few different ways. In the beginning, I started from a photo from my own archive, but in a very loose manner- maybe I just made use of an essential line in a sketch. I didn’t allow myself to look at photos while working, which freed me from distractions like depicting likeness. Soon I got so busy working with the body of clay that I didn’t look at anything. Sediment refers to material that sinks through water and settles on the seabed or lake floor. In the accompanying essay of the same name, I interweave memories of the Baltic sea and its materiality with the process of sculpting in clay. The imagery I created in my essay inspired new sculptures, and those sculptures in turn gave rise to ideas for new work. Sediment is a result of an interplay between old memories, the place I created in my essay and my feelings shaped from recent experiences. The work was exhibited as part of my class’s graduation show, titled Reflektor. Elements of the piece were also shown at ABC Konsthall in Stockholm as part of Reflektor II.
