The combination of the Holy Virgin Mary and the national ethnicity of the nation tells the story of the existence of two equally important images in Latvian culture – a symbol representative of Christianity and the image of a woman so recognisable in traditional culture. The artist, combining the two female characters with her own self-portrait, reflexes about the multi-layered nature of our culture — an era of religions, traditions and contemporary selfies that exist within it. Weaving technique, which plays an important role in Latvian culture, also attaches significant semantic importance.
