Absorption NOW is THEN, 2024

180 x 90 cm

Oil paints on canvas

Absorption NOW is THEN Trying to grasp the present, I constantly move to the past or the future. The desire to concentrate myself on the here and now alone requires great inner strength and effort. This is constantly hindered by memories emerging from the past and projections of the future. My present is filled with the past and the future. During my master project, I searched for and found, through artistic forms of expression, what has been with me in my life all along, without changing its form and meaning. This is my personal symbol of constancy – my eye, my gaze, my vision – this is the iris of my eye. The attempt to catch the moment of the present, the moment of the present, is also depicted using symbolism – these are the forms of glass that refract and take on various reflections. Illusions are created on the surface of the glass and through its translucency – the iris of my eye appears from various angles. Each reflection is different, no longer similar to the one seen before. However, in its essence, the iris is always the same. The circumstances that transform the form of the iris (my vision and perception) beyond recognition are my living world – the cloak of Maya. Yes, in the language of art I say: everything we can know about the world is here and now, but it is only a projection of what was or will be at the present point, having changed its forms. In the present, through the broken planes of glass, I look at MYSELF looking at the past and the future. Absorption is the ability of consciousness to be simultaneously there and then and here and now – now is then – then is now. The explanatory note must be accompanied by a short essay. These are the origins of my creative work, which tell more and deeper than scientific texts. This essay arose from the painting project “Absorption. Now is then” is an integral part of this work and a source of inspiration. I am still very young, lying on a hammock in the living room of my grandparents’ house. Nearby, our large round table has already been folded out and has become an oval. It is all laden with ancient festive dishes. Bright sunbeams and shadows of tree leaves are splashing on it through the window, turning the colored glass dishes into enchanting mica. I get up, carefully approach and choose another one, always new. Even more beautiful, even more interesting, more colorful. I will save the most beautiful one for the end, for a snack, so to speak. It will be the large brown punch bowl with amber-glowing grapes instead of handles. I carefully examine each dish from close up and far away, against the light and in the twilight. I catch sun bunnies and throw them around the living room. How magical and diverse this world can be. From the kitchen comes the smell of homemade donuts. Everyone will gather in the evening.
