Siiri Torvinen Emerging artist
Artist's country of origin: Finland
My works explore social contact, intimacy, and the feeling of being an outsider through play. I work with video, embroidery, and creative writing. I am inspired by children’s literature, in which everyday things are romanticized and exaggerated to staggering proportions. Devouring a cake becomes a game, and social hierarchy is rearranged through skipping rope. Chants and rhymes spread from town to town, with words building up and developing new meanings. What initially seems harmless often hides something dark underneath. I’m graduating in spring 2024 from Turku University of Applied Sciences Art Academy. Simultaneously, I’m also graduating from Viita Academy, a three-year creative writing school in Tampere. Before this, I attended Tammerkoski Upper Secondary School’s visual arts unit. My latest exhibition was a group exhibition with other graduating fine art students at Turku’s Taiteen Talo in spring 2024. Last fall, my video ‘Näissä juhlissa/At This Party’ was part of the Turku Video Art Festival’s student screening. My interest in attire and fabrics is evident in the costume and set designs I created for the play ‘LeikistiVakavasti’ in 2024. My first picture book will be published in spring 2025 by Kumma-kustannus.
