Maria Kapajeva

Maria Kapajeva (1976) is an artist whose feminist point of departure often
brings forward microhistories and peripheral narratives. She works across a
range of media, including found and conventional photographic images, video
installations, textiles, and embroidery. Kapajeva completed her Master’s degree
at the University of Westminster in the United Kingdom (2013) and has been
pursuing doctoral studies at the Estonian Academy of Arts since 2021. In 2024
she received the annual prize of the Cultural Endowment of Estonia for Visual
and Applied Arts, and her works are included in the collections of the Tartu Art
Museum, Kiasma, and Fotomuseum Winterthur, among others. From 2026 to
2028 she is also a recipient of the Estonian state artist’s salary. Kapajeva is a
member of the Estonian Union of Photography Artists and the Estonian Artists’
Association.
