Maria Izabella Lehtsaar
Artist's country of origin: Estonia
Maria Izabella Lehtsaar is an artist based in Tallinn. They graduated from the Department of Graphic Arts at EKA, and holds a Master’s degree in Contemporary Art from EKA. Lehtsaar works primarily with underrepresented queer experience and narrative, often playing with the boundaries between reality and fantasy. Their work often narrates of spaces and hidden symbols and encoded meanings in queer and lesbian material culture. In their work they blend pop culture aesthetics and sensitive monochrome graphics, combining them in practice with textiles, drawing and poetry. Their use of various mediums visually bend the familiarity with layered meanings. Lehtsaar’s first solo exhibition “Bruised Lilac” took place in 2024. In addition, the artist has participated in several group exhibitions, such as the exhibition “We Don‘t Do This. Intimacy, Norms and Fantasies in Baltic Art” at the Lithuanian Museum of Contemporary Art (MO museum). The artist received the Wiiralt stipend in 2023.
