Mari Mäntynen Emerging artist

Mari Mäntynen

Artist's country of origin: Finland

Mari Mäntynen (b.1997) is a Finnish visual artist born and raised in Kerava’s prison area.

Mäntynen’s artistic work focuses on the question: How could we understand each other better? She deals with tensions and social problems through collaboration, play and absurdity. Mäntynen uses photography, video and performance as a method to bring people together, challenging them to confront each other and their

prejudices. The works are participatory and Mäntynen also performs in them herself.

Mäntynen is currently pursuing a Master of Arts degree at the Academy of Fine Arts, University of the Arts Helsinki. She completed her bachelor’s degree in photography at Lab University of Applied Sciences in Lahti in 2023. Mäntynen’s solo exhibitions have been held at the Peri Photography Centre in Turku and the Nykyaika Photography Centre in Tampere. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions, for example at the Amos Rex Art Museum.
