Laura Matukonytė

Artist is based in: Lithuania

Laura Matukonytė is a Lithuanian interdisciplinary artist whose practice centers on paper-based sculptural installations. With a background in fashion and print design, she merges these disciplines with the context of contemporary sculpture, investigating the material potential of paper to generate form. Her work is grounded in an ongoing dialogue with paper, expressed through interconnected systems of form, fragility, and structure. Matukonytė’s installations are shaped by the playfulness of everyday life, domestic environments, and architectural space. Her minimalist, intimate pieces evoke (non)presence, desire, and a subtle sensuality. Drawing on DIY culture, she often reconstructs household and everyday materials to explore ephemeral beauty and gently question social norms. She completed her MA in Sculpture at the Vilnius Academy of Arts (2023–2025), where she also earned a BA in Fashion Design (2002–2006). Recent exhibitions include her solo show (NON-) FUNCTIONAL PAUSE at Galerie am Kunst (Germany, 2025); a 9-meter-high transparent paper sculpture suspended in the stairwell of the Lithuanian National Gallery of Art (2025); and the duo exhibition SENSING TAKES TIME at Meno Parkas Gallery (2025). She actively participates in group exhibitions across Lithuania, including THE ASSEMBLY at the M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art (2024) and numerous shows at the Vilnius Academy of Arts. Her international group exhibition participation includes CONVERSATION at Camberwell Space Gallery, University of the Arts London (2023). Matukonytė has taken part in several artist residencies, including the Paper Residency organized by the Haus des Papiers Museum at Kunst Ort Lehnin (Germany, 2025), and a creative residency at the Telšiai Gallery of the Vilnius Academy of Arts (2024). Her studio practice often focuses on the tactile exploration of paper, scanned collages, and materials, with an emphasis on emotional presence and slow processes. Her collaborative project Documents (2024) involved co-authorship, exhibition design, and curatorial work at the Vilnius Academy of Arts.
