Alex Körnegård

Artist's country of origin: Sweden

After three years of study at the Academy of Fine Arts in Umeå, and having lived in the north of Sweden, my work has become deeply influenced by the region’s unique climate and atmosphere. The long, dark months, an intense and defining aspect of life in the north, shape my artistic practice both mentally and physically. These extended periods of darkness, contrasted with the brilliant seasonal luminance that reflects off ice and water, offer a stark duality that continues to inform my visual language.

The northern pace of life, already slow and introspective, becomes even more subdued during winter. This seasonal hibernation, where solitude, silence, and stillness dominate, has not only affected my way of living but has also become integral to my creative process. I have come to embrace slowness as a methodology.

I work with materials that inherently resist speed, such as extremely slow-drying paint. My process involves the gradual accumulation of countless layers, a meditative and deliberate engagement with the surface. Each painting demands time, not only in its making but also in its viewing.

In an era of constant acceleration and surface-level perception, my work disrupts the rapid pace of contemporary life. My practice not only challenges conventional notions of time but invites a deeper engagement with both the act of creation and the artwork itself. My paintings unfold over time, revealing a surface that, with extended interaction, becomes increasingly rich with visual information.
