Dzelde Mierkalne Emerging artist
Artist's country of origin: Latvia
By showing an effort to make the themes addressed in the works into a joke and minor failures and when making the spectator laugh, when they reflect on the aching-and-not-so-much way of how the world and life takes its place.
Dzelde does not entwine too much solemnity in the works and is one of the examples of the possibly self-destructive mentality of today’s youth. Dzelde Mierkalne has finished BA in the Department of Graphic Art in Art Academy of Latvia. Most of her artistic practise focuses on graphic print and form, traditional technique mixing with contemporary techniques and materials. She has participated in group exhibitions since 2014 with graphic works, paintings and installations, as well as made illustration books for both children and adults. In 2019 Dzelde Mierkalne participated in a group exhibition “BLACK MARKET” in Kim? Contemporary Art Centre in Riga, as well as “BUMMER” in Tallina Street Square together with other graphic artists; in 2021 her work “The Force Majeured Castle” was a part of the project “Lagūna” by the artist and curator Kaspars Groševs. The same year Dzelde has had her first solo exhibition “END IS NIGH!” in DOM Gallery, Riga, with the series of works that Dzelde graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia.
