“Somnum Exterreri” or “Nightmare” is the first major solo exhibition of Merle Luhaäär-Avril's work in recent years, which focuses on turning a dream and / or dream into a nightmare. Works created in different techniques (sculpture, screen printing, photography, digital art, painting, neon light, etc.) form a dreamlike installation as a psychedelic collage that combines the relativity of (sur) reality and tries to grasp the delicate border between the two worlds. A dream can go unnoticed into a nightmare and a nightmare into a dream. Where does the dream end and the production of reality begin? Is there a border between them at all, or is reality and dream completely merged in the middle of modern tailor-made (virtual) reality?
Merle Luhaäär-Avril graduated from the Royal College of Art, Faculty of Fine Arts with a master’s degree in graphics in 2019, and has a master’s degree in art history and visual culture from the Tallinn Academy of Arts. Her work has participated in international group exhibitions in Tallinn, Dubai, London, Venice, Barcelona, Zurich, etc. The collection of works presented was completed between 2016-2021 at the Venice Art Residency, the RCA Studio in London and at home in Tallinn.
