SOIL, 2021

oil on canvas

This work was exhibited at my solo-exhibition “Whole” during Art Festival Cesis, Latvia, summer of 2021. The inspiration for this series was born in the dark shadow cast on to us by the global pandemic. Since the moment it began, I noticed that our lives had changed based on a huge emphasis on physical health, consequentially leaving behind concerns about our mental health. Since no one could help me with the increasing hopelessness of all the canceled plans and exhibitions of the pandemic, I decided to take my mental health matters into my own hands. I engaged in several ancient healing rituals, which later came to be the source of inspiration for a series of artworks. The inspiration behind this painting comes from the work “CYCLE”, where I performed an ancient healing ritual by burying myself neck deep in soil. In this painting my aim was to represent the feeling of moist, dark, cool soil on one’s skin, the network of life that it consists of (roots, worms, ants, plants), and the both majestic, frightening and protective power it radiates. In latvian language we call the earth our mother (“Zemes māte” – in latvian), because since ancient times it has been a source that has fed us, as well as protected us, when we came to lie down for our final rest.
