Other Matters, 2021

Remnants of concrete casting, inkjet print on backlit film

“Other Matters makes a counterpart for my first thesis exhibition, and it was exhibited in March 2021 as part of the annual MFA degree show in gallery Exhibition Laboratory, Helsinki. The installation consists of remnants of the process of Fracture-installation: the byproducts of concrete casting and a print made out of a corrupted image file of the digitalized diafilm, presented as a photographic inkjet print within the preceding exhibition. Other Matters takes the idea of coincidental fragmentation further, embodying the deconstruction of representation along the material process. Occurred as an unintended incidence both the concrete structure and a photograph has become visual noise and a ruin. Other Matters makes a notion of absence and change, fortified by its temporary nature and embedded in the way it inhabits the gallery. The image of RGB grain is printed on backlit film and installed on the windows of the gallery. It’s like a large light box of visual noise which appears different day-to-day according to the natural light. The crushed concrete and sand is placed on the floor between two pillars that work as the bearing structures of the space. It awakens an idea of the prospective dismantling of the seemingly solid constructions.”
