Broken Christ, 2021

280 x 220 cm
€3080

Oil on canvas

“The cross as a symbol probably has the most different contradicting meanings of all other symbols. That is why I painted the cross as stretching in each direction to infinity. For some people, it signifies oppression, suffering, colonization, death, and all the negative connotations, but for others, it is love, compassion, hope with all the positive connotations. This painting is part of my research on religion in modernity. I have created my own archive of images that show old and beat up, broken Christian symbols that I’ve found while visiting different cemeteries in the Lithuanian countryside. This painting was shown in the exhibition “380 B.C.” VAA Exhibition Halls “Titanikas”, Vilnius, 2022”
